De GEUZEN :

The word "Geus" has been derived from the French word "gueux", meaning "beggar". The plural word "Geuzen" (Beggars) is used to indicate the total popular opposition movements against Philips II (second half of the 16th century), King of Spain and the Netherlands (among others). Generally spoken , the Beggars had two mainstreams : the Sea Beggars (watergeuzen) and the Wild Beggars (bosgeuzen).
